Sheepskin rugs are not only luxurious but can also provide relief for sensitive skin. The natural lanolin found in sheepskin closely resembles the oils in human skin, making it gentle and soothing for conditions such as eczema and rashes. The soft, breathable fibres help regulate temperature while providing comfort. Sheepskin is also naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites and allergens, making it a practical choice for many households.

Caring for Your Sheepskin

Rules of the Wool – A Few Things to Remember:

  • Avoid direct sunlight, as UV exposure can damage fibres and fade darker shades.
  • Shake rugs, cushions, and bean bags regularly to keep the wool lively and fresh.
  • Vacuum rugs regularly using a plain suction vacuum.
  • Attend to spills and stains as quickly as possible.
  • Do not rub, brush, or massage wool skin products when they are damp or wet.

Turbo or revolving brush vacuum cleaners can damage wool fibres and cause frizziness. These should not be used.

General Care

Regular vacuuming with a plain suction vacuum will help maintain the wool fibres. Longer wool rugs benefit from occasional brushing with a wire pet brush (pet slicker pad). Small spills can be gently sponged with a damp cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure to strong sunlight, as UV rays may damage natural fibres and fade dyed sheepskins. Do not store in damp or wet conditions, as the natural leather pelt may deteriorate.

Treat your sheepskin like one of the family.

Brushing

Brushing is recommended for unshorn, long wool products only. After washing, wool fibres may return to their natural curly state. Brushing with a wire wool comb while the rug is damp, and again once dry, will help restore the fluffy appearance and natural loft of the fibres.

Drying

Air-dry your sheepskin by hanging it on a line or laying it flat, ensuring it is kept out of direct sunlight. Gently stretch the sheepskin during drying to help maintain its shape and prevent shrinkage.

Do not tumble dry, iron, or bleach your sheepskin.
