The Agnes cushion is a tribute to Agnes Martin, who moved to New York with $50 and became one of the most pioneering painters of her generation. In the male-dominated art world of the 1950s and ’60s, she carved out her own vision. When she first drew a grid, she was thinking about the innocence of trees. Her hand-drawn grids, influenced by Zen Buddhism and Taoism, expressed abstract emotions like happiness, beauty, release. She sought formlessness within structure, like looking at the ocean or an empty beach.
